New Airport for Murcia Region of Spain

The long-awaited new airport built to serve the Murcia region of Spain is due to finally open in the new year.

The new airport, known officially as the Murcia Region (Región de Murcia) International Airport, but also called Corvera Airport, becomes operational on 15th January 2019, almost 11 years after work first began.

All commercial flights will transfer from Murcia-San Javier Airport to the new airport overnight on the 14th of January, leaving the former airport to concentrate on military flights only.

Located just outside the village of Corvera, the new Murcia Region International Airport is midway between the cities of Murcia and Cartagena, both less than 30 minutes’ drive away, and also within 20 minutes of many golf resorts including La Torre and Hacienda del Álamo.

The Mar Menor lagoon and resort of Los Alcázares are both just a 30-35-minute drive. The resort of Puerto de Mazarrón and the Costa Cálida is around 45-50 minutes away, and the popular community of Camposol 40-45 minutes.

With the capacity to operate 23,000 take-offs or landings a year, serving three million passengers annually, the new airport is expected to help boost the tourist trade of the Murcia area.

It has a single 28,500-square-metre passenger terminal with 25 check-in desks, nine gates and four luggage reclaim belts.

Most airlines are expected to simply transfer their services to the new Murcia Region Airport, with easyJet having already confirmed that they will be using it from March 2019 for flights from Bristol, Gatwick and Southend. Likewise, Jet2 will be flying there from Leeds, Bradford and Manchester. Ryanair are yet to confirm their position.

With increased capacity from a brand-new airport, Murcia could be putting itself back on the map for overseas property investors looking to buy investment property in Spain, with tourist numbers expected to rise.
